Gynaecomastia Surgery: A Guide for Men Considering Chest Reduction

Gynaecomastia – the enlargement of male breast tissue – is a common, but often under-discussed condition that I see affecting men of all ages. It can cause both physical discomfort and emotional distress, regardless of fitness level or body weight. In the UK, around 30% of men are impacted by gynaecomastia, and some estimates suggest that up to 70% may experience it at some point in their lives due to hormonal, medication-related or lifestyle factors.

Male Cosmetic Surgery in the UK: What the Latest BAAPS Data Shows

According to the latest British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) audit in 2024, men accounted for 6.5% of all cosmetic surgical procedures in the UK, with 1,799 male operations recorded.

Gynaecomastia or chest reduction surgery is one of the top three most popular cosmetic procedures for men, alongside rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

Why Men Choose Gynaecomastia Surgery

Patients come to me for this procedure for many reasons:

  • To improve the appearance of their chest
  • To remove stubborn fat, glandular tissue or excess skin
  • To relieve discomfort from tight clothing or exercise
  • To correct hormone or medication-related changes
  • To stand straighter and feel more confident
  • To finally feel comfortable in their own skin

This isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about freedom, comfort and self-confidence.

My Approach to Gynaecomastia Surgery

Every patient’s chest shape, concerns and lifestyle are different, so my approach is always highly individualised. During your consultation, we’ll discuss what bothers you most, assess the chest tissue, including glandular tissue, fat distribution and skin quality, and decide on the most appropriate surgical technique for your anatomy.

The procedure typically involves removing excess glandular tissue and fat, and where needed, tightening or reshaping the surrounding area to achieve a flatter, more balanced contour. I may also use liposuction to refine the chest and enhance definition while maintaining a natural, masculine result.

Gynaecomastia Surgery Overview

  • Time in theatre: Approximately 1 to 2 hours
  • Hospital stay: Either same-day discharge or an overnight stay depending on the complexity of the procedure

Gynaecomastia Surgery Recovery Timeline: What to Expect

If you’re considering gynaecomastia surgery, understanding the recovery timeline can help you plan with confidence. Every patient heals at their own pace, but these milestones offer a useful guide:

Day 7 to 10: Most swelling and discomfort begin to ease

Day 10 to 14: You can drive again, provided you’re comfortable and off pain medication

Day 14 to 21: Many patients return to work, depending on their role

Week 4 to 6: Light exercise can resume; avoid chest workouts until cleared

6 to 12 weeks: Final results begin to settle, and the chest contour becomes more defined

Some swelling, tightness or firmness is normal in the early weeks and gradually improves as the tissue softens and heals. I advise patients to take things steadily, wear their compression garment as instructed, and follow all post-operative guidance to achieve the best result.

My Advice for Anyone Considering Gynaecomastia

To promote healing and achieve the best possible results, I provide my patients with the following key recommendations:

  • Choose a qualified, experienced surgeon who is registered with BAPRAS or BAAPS
  • Follow all pre- and post-operative instructions carefully
  • Arrange some help at home for the first few days
  • Wear your compression garment as advised; to reduce swelling, support healing, and help your chest settle into its new shape
  • Eat a nutritious diet, stay hydrated, and avoid smoking or excessive alcohol
  • Be patient with yourself; recovery takes time, and gradual improvement is completely normal
