Breast Reduction Surgery in Manchester

Breast reduction surgery is one of the UK’s most commonly performed breast procedures, with approximately 4,700 procedures carried out each year. THE PROCEDURE

What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery involves removing excess breast tissue, fat and skin to create a breast size that is more balanced and comfortable. It also encompasses a breast lift, which involves lifting the nipple areola complex and re-shaping the gland to rebalance breast shape, providing a more youthful appearance.
Patients will also often benefit from liposuction to the sides of the chest wall area to reduce fatty deposits in these areas, narrow the torso and refine their silhouette.
Women choose breast reduction surgery for a range of reasons, often influenced by both physical symptoms and lifestyle factors. For most of Mr Baker’s patients, breast reduction is not simply about aesthetics, it is about feeling comfortable in their body again and removing the limitations that breast size can sometimes create.

BENEFITS & SUITABILITY

Benefits and Suitability for Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery may be suitable for patients wishing to reduce the size and weight of their breasts, improve body proportion, and alleviate the physical discomfort associated with overly large breasts. The procedure can create breasts that are lighter, more balanced and better proportioned to the body, while also improving breast shape and overall comfort.
Many women live with the effects of larger breasts for years before realising surgery could improve their quality of life.

Swelling gradually settles over the first few months, with the breasts continuing to soften and refine in shape. Final results are typically visible from around 6 months after surgery.
Patients are advised to wear a supportive surgical bra day and night for the first six weeks to support healing and help maintain their new breast shape.
Breast Reduction Scars
All breast reduction procedures involve some degree of scarring. However, incisions are carefully planned to be as discreet as possible, and scars typically fade significantly over time. The typical scar pattern is around the newly sited areola border, straight down, and in the lower fold of the breast (inverted T, or Wise pattern scarring). Mr Baker will discuss the expected scar pattern during your consultation, draw you diagrams, and show you photographs of patients with similar scar patterns.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

FAQs — Your Questions Answered

Will a breast reduction make my breasts smaller and more lifted?
Yes. Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue and skin to reduce breast size while also reshaping and lifting the breasts. The nipple will also be repositioned so that it sits higher on the chest wall on the most projected part of your new breast shape. The aim is to create a more balanced and youthful breast shape that is proportionate to your body.
The results of a breast reduction are long-lasting. However, factors such as ageing, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and hormonal changes can affect breast size and shape over time. Maintaining a stable weight can help preserve your results, as does wearing a supportive bra.
Most women find that breast reduction surgery helps relieve symptoms associated with large, heavy breasts, including back, neck and shoulder discomfort, almost immediately after the operation. During your consultation, Mr Baker will discuss your symptoms and whether breast reduction may be beneficial for you.
If you experience physical discomfort, or find that large breasts affect your confidence or daily activities, you may be a good candidate. The Benefits and Suitability section above lists the most common signs, and a consultation will confirm whether the procedure is appropriate for your anatomy and goals.
The amount of tissue that can be removed varies depending on your anatomy, symptoms and desired outcome. During your consultation, Mr Baker will assess your breasts and discuss the extent of reduction that will relieve your symptoms while maintaining natural-looking results that are in proportion to you. Mr Baker will ask about your individual preferences regarding breast size as part of your consultation, and advise whether this is achievable for you.
The nipple is not typically removed from your breast tissue during a breast reduction. For the vast majority of breast reductions, Mr Baker uses a ‘superomedial pedicle’ technique, meaning that the nipple and areola remain attached to some of your breast tissue from the upper inner aspect of your breast which supports blood supply to the nipple in its new more uplifted and youthful position. If you have a very significant amount of breast droop and the nipples sit very low, then Mr Baker may advise a technique called nipple grafts are used, where the nipple and areola are detached from the breast and replaced as a graft in their new position, but this is not typical in his practice.
Changes in nipple sensation can occur after breast reduction surgery. Some patients experience temporary numbness or increased sensitivity, which often improves as healing progresses. In some cases, changes in sensation may be permanent. Mr Baker will discuss these risks with you during your consultation.
Some women are able to breastfeed after breast reduction surgery, while others may experience difficulties. Breastfeeding outcomes can vary depending on individual factors, the surgical technique used, and the time between surgery and breastfeeding. Mr Baker will discuss this with you if future breastfeeding is important to you.
It is generally recommended to wait at least 6 months after you have stopped breastfeeding before undergoing breast surgery. This allows your breasts time to settle into their natural shape and size, helping Mr Baker plan the procedure more accurately and achieve the best possible results.
Yes. Women who have undergone breast reduction surgery can still have routine mammograms and breast screening. It is important to let the radiographer know about any previous breast surgery, as changes to the breast tissue may be visible on imaging. Having a breast reduction or uplift should not prevent you from attending regular breast screening appointments.
Breast reduction surgery does not affect fertility or your ability to become pregnant. The procedure is performed on the breasts and does not involve the reproductive organs. If you are planning a pregnancy in the future, Mr Baker can discuss how pregnancy and breastfeeding may affect your breasts and long-term results.
You will notice an immediate improvement in breast size and improvement in breast shape after surgery, and it is quite typical to have improvement of your symptoms within hours or days of the surgery, but swelling and healing can take time. Final results typically become more apparent over the following months as the breasts settle, with most patients seeing their outcome by around 6-12 months after surgery.
