THE PROCEDURE

What is a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?

Breast uplift, also known as mastopexy or breast lift, is a surgical procedure designed to raise and reshape the breasts, restoring a fuller, more youthful contour. This is achieved by removing excess skin and repositioning the breast tissue and nipples, helping to address sagging caused by factors such as ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight fluctuations. The vast majority of your breast tissue is preserved, with only small amounts being removed if required to help with shape.
Is Breast Enlargement Right For You?
TECHNIQUE & OPTIONS

Mr Baker’s Technique: Auto-Augmentation Mastopexy

Mr Baker typically uses a technique called ‘total glandular remodelling’ or ‘auto-augmentation’ which involves preserving all of your own breast tissue and reshaping the breast so that the majority of breast volume is positioned behind the nipple to provide central projection, rather than below it. This is a particularly useful technique for patients who have experienced significant weight loss, feel deflated following pregnancy or breastfeeding, or are troubled by drooping as a result of ageing.
Breast Lift with Implants or Fat Transfer
Breast uplift surgery can be combined with a breast implant or with fat transfer to increase total breast volume and enhance fullness of the upper pole of the breast, if this is required to meet your aesthetic goals.

Incisions are carefully placed to lift and reshape the breasts
Excess skin is removed and the breast tissue is repositioned to create a fuller, more youthful contour
The nipple and areola are repositioned to a higher, natural-looking position

Recovery following breast uplift surgery varies from patient to patient, with most individuals able to gradually return to normal daily activities within the first few days.

Around 5 days before returning to light lifting, including carrying a baby
Approximately 7 days before driving
Around 10-14 days before returning to work (depending on your role)
Approximately 4 weeks before returning to exercise or more strenuous activities
Around 6 months before the final results are visible, with scars and tissue continuing to settle for up to 12 months
Swelling gradually settles over the first few months, with the breasts continuing to soften and refine in shape. Final results are typically visible from around 6 months after surgery.
Patients are advised to wear a supportive surgical bra day and night for the first six weeks to support healing and help maintain their new breast shape.
Breast Lift Scars
All breast uplift procedures involve some degree of scarring. However, incisions are carefully planned to be as discreet as possible, and scars typically fade significantly over time. The typical scar pattern is around the newly sited areola border, straight down, and in the lower fold of the breast (inverted T, or Wise pattern scarring). Mr Baker will discuss the expected scar pattern during your consultation, draw you diagrams, and show you photographs of patients with similar scar patterns.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Breast Lift FAQs

Will a breast uplift increase my breast size?
No. A breast uplift is designed to raise and reshape the breasts rather than increase their volume. If you would like larger breasts as well as a lifted appearance, a breast uplift can be combined with breast implants or fat transfer (lipomodelling).
All breast uplift procedures involve some scarring, usually around the areola, straight down and along the breast fold. Incisions are planned to be as discreet as possible and fade significantly over time. See the Breast Lift Scars section above for more detail, and Mr Baker will show you examples at your consultation.
The results of a breast uplift are long-lasting, but the natural ageing process, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy can affect breast shape over time. Maintaining a stable weight can help preserve your results, as does wearing a supportive bra.
Yes. Many patients choose to combine a breast uplift with breast augmentation to improve both breast position and volume. An implant can also provide more fullness to the upper part of the breast. Mr Baker will advise whether a combined procedure is suitable for your goals. In some cases, it is advisable to perform the procedure in two stages to minimise the risk of complications and provide a more reliable long-term result.
Yes. Breast uplift combined with fat transfer is a procedure which typically suits patients who are looking for a modest increase in volume alongside breast uplift, and a very natural result. The procedures can be performed at the same time. It may be that more than one episode of fat transfer is required to reach your desired volume. Mr Baker can discuss this with you in clinic based on your breast volume, overall body shape, and goals, and help you to decide whether this might be something that is worth considering in your individual circumstances.
If your breasts have lost firmness, sit lower on the chest, or your nipples point downwards, and you are broadly happy with your breast volume, you may be a good candidate. The list in “Who is Suitable for a Breast Lift?” above covers the most common signs, and a consultation will confirm whether the procedure suits your anatomy and goals.
Changes in nipple sensation can occur after breast uplift surgery. Some patients experience temporary numbness or increased sensitivity, which often improves as healing progresses. In some cases, changes in sensation may be permanent. Mr Baker will discuss these risks with you during your consultation.
Some women are able to breastfeed after breast uplift surgery, while others may experience difficulties. Breastfeeding outcomes can vary depending on individual factors, the surgical technique used, and the time between surgery and breastfeeding. Mr Baker will discuss this with you if future breastfeeding is important to you.
It is generally recommended to wait at least 6 months after you have stopped breastfeeding before undergoing breast surgery. This allows your breasts time to settle into their natural shape and size, helping Mr Baker plan the procedure more accurately and achieve the best possible results. If you are also thinking about abdominal surgery after pregnancy, a breast lift can form part of a mummy makeover.

Yes. Women who have undergone breast uplift surgery can still have routine mammograms and breast screening. It is important to let the radiographer know about any previous breast surgery, as changes to the breast tissue may be visible on imaging. Having a breast uplift should not prevent you from attending regular breast screening appointments.

Breast uplift surgery does not affect fertility or your ability to become pregnant. The procedure is performed on the breasts and does not involve the reproductive organs. If you are planning a pregnancy in the future, Mr Baker can discuss how pregnancy and breastfeeding may affect your breasts and long-term results.

You will notice an immediate improvement in breast shape and position after surgery, but swelling and healing can take time. Final results typically become more apparent over the following months as the breasts settle, with most patients seeing their outcome by around 6-12 months after surgery.
